What monitoring actually measures
At minimum, energy produced over time, read at the inverter and pushed to a portal you can log into.
Better systems add consumption monitoring via current transformers at your service panel, which is what lets you see self-consumption and export separately rather than production alone.
Production-only monitoring answers "is it working". Production plus consumption answers "is it worth what I paid", which is the more useful question once the system has been running a year.
System-level against panel-level
System-level and panel-level monitoring answer different questions, and the distinction matters most when something goes wrong.
- System-level. A string inverter reports one number for the whole array. If output is 15% low you know something is wrong and nothing about where. Diagnosis means a site visit and string testing.
- Panel-level. Microinverters and optimisers report per module. A single failed unit shows up immediately as one flat line among thirty. Diagnosis takes seconds.
- The practical consequence. Panel-level monitoring often pays for itself the first time something fails, particularly on a complicated or shaded roof.
Why "zero production" usually is not
A monitoring portal shows zero when it receives no data. It cannot distinguish "the array produced nothing" from "nothing told me what the array produced".
The common causes are mundane: a replaced home router with a new network name, a gateway unplugged during redecorating, a tripped breaker on the monitoring circuit, or an expired manufacturer account.
Before assuming a fault, check whether your utility meter or in-home display shows the system exporting. If it does, your array is fine and your monitoring is not. Monitoring showing zero walks through the full check.
Reading the data without fooling yourself
Two habits prevent most false alarms and catch most real faults.
Compare like with like: this June against last June, not June against May. Seasonal swing is far larger than most faults and will convince you something is wrong when nothing is.
And watch the shape of a clear day, not just the daily total. A smooth curve that peaks around midday is healthy. A curve with a flat top is clipping, which may be by design. A notch at the same time each day is shade. A curve that is the right shape but too low across the board is soiling or degradation.

What moves the price

Common questions
My solar monitoring shows zero — is my system broken?
Often not. A monitoring gateway that has lost its internet connection reports zero while the array produces normally. Check whether your utility meter shows export before assuming a generation fault. A replaced home router is the single most common cause.
Do I need panel-level monitoring?
It is not essential, but it changes diagnosis from a site visit to a glance. It is most valuable on shaded or multi-plane roofs, where individual panels are more likely to underperform for different reasons.
My installer went out of business — have I lost monitoring?
Usually not. The portal belongs to the inverter manufacturer, not the installer, and manufacturers will generally transfer account ownership to the homeowner. You may need to prove you own the property.
How do I know if my production is normal?
Compare the same month across years rather than consecutive months, and look at the shape of a clear day. A smooth midday peak is healthy; a daily notch is shade; uniformly low output suggests soiling or degradation.
