The tariff trap, checked first
Many homeowners are on export terms that are no longer offered to new systems, grandfathered for a fixed period when their system was approved.
In a number of jurisdictions, materially modifying the system — including adding capacity — can end that grandfathering and move you onto current rules. Where current rules pay significantly less for exports, the added panels can reduce your overall return even though they produce more electricity.
This is checkable before you spend anything. Ask your utility, in writing, what adding capacity does to your existing interconnection agreement. Do that before you get a quote, not after. Net metering vs net billing explains what the difference is worth.
Does the inverter have room?
Inverters are sized to the array they were installed with, usually with a little headroom and not much.
- String inverter with spare capacity. The good case. Panels are added to an existing or new string within the inverter’s limits.
- String inverter already at capacity. You need a larger inverter or a second one, which is a significant part of the cost of the original system.
- Microinverters or optimisers. Usually the easiest expansion, because each new panel brings its own conversion. Watch for per-branch limits.
- Hybrid inverter with a battery. Check the solar input limit specifically, which is often lower than the headline rating suggests.
The service panel, again
Adding solar capacity increases the backfeed into your service panel, and that has to stay within the limit your code sets.
A system that was comfortably within the rule at 6 kW may not be at 9 kW, and the fix is either a panel upgrade, a line-side tap, or accepting a smaller expansion than you wanted. Our panel upgrade check gives you a first read before anyone visits.
Old panels and new ones together
You will not be able to buy the same modules you installed eight years ago, and you do not need to.
What matters is that mismatched panels are not put in the same series string, where the weakest module drags the rest down. Separate strings, or module-level electronics, handle the mismatch cleanly.
The older panels will also have degraded somewhat, so expect the new ones to outproduce them. That is normal and not a fault.
