Solar Carports

A solar carport is a structure built to hold panels that happens to shelter a car underneath. That order matters: you are paying for a building, and the panels are the roof of it. Per watt it is the most expensive of the three mounting options, and it is worth it when the shelter has value to you independently.

What you are actually buying

A carport array carries every cost a ground mount does, plus the cost of a structure tall enough and strong enough to park under.

Deeper foundations, heavier columns and beams, greater span, and a design that has to shed water somewhere sensible rather than onto the driver.

So the honest test is whether you would value covered parking on its own. If yes, the array is offsetting the cost of something you wanted. If not, a ground mount does the same electrical job for less.

Where it genuinely wins

Three situations where a carport is the right call rather than the expensive one.

  • No usable roof and no usable yard. A driveway is often the last unshaded surface a property has.
  • You are charging an EV. The car sits where the electricity is generated, and the charger run is short.
  • You want the shelter anyway. Hail, sun damage and snow clearing all have real value in the right climate.

The engineering is the expensive part

A carport is a large, mostly solid surface held up in the air, which makes it a sail in wind and a shelf in snow.

Wind uplift and snow load are what size the columns, the beams and the foundations, and they are set by your local code rather than by preference. In a high-snow or high-wind area the structure cost rises sharply, and no amount of shopping around changes the load case.

Ask to see the structural design, and who stamped it.

Water has to go somewhere

A panel array on a frame drips between the modules. A carport is expected not to.

Good designs either seal between modules or run a gutter system to a downpipe at a column. Poor designs let water sheet off the front edge exactly where you open the car door, and freeze there in winter.

This is a small detail that people notice every single day, so ask about it before it is built.

  • Who is doing the structural engineering, and what wind and snow loads are they designing to?
  • Where does rainwater go, and what happens at the edge I walk under?
  • Does this need a zoning review as well as a building permit?
  • Should we run an EV charger circuit while the trench is open?

Common questions

Is a solar carport worth it?

It is the most expensive way to mount panels per watt, so it is worth it when you value covered parking independently, or when the roof and the yard are both unusable. If you only want electricity, a ground mount is cheaper.

Does a solar carport need planning permission?

It is a structure, so most jurisdictions require a building permit and apply setback and height rules. Some also require design review. Confirm before committing.

Can I charge an EV from a solar carport?

Yes, and it is the most natural pairing — the car parks under the array. Running the charger circuit while the conduit trench is open costs far less than adding it later.

Do solar carports leak onto the car?

Panels on an open frame drip between modules. A well designed carport either seals those gaps or gutters the water to a downpipe. Ask how yours handles it.
