Ground-Mount Solar

A ground mount puts the array on a frame in your yard instead of on your roof. It produces more per panel, because you choose the angle and the direction instead of accepting what the roof gives you. It also costs more, because you are building a foundation and trenching a cable run that a roof array does not need.

  • You choose orientation and tilt, so output per panel is usually higher than the same panels on a compromised roof.
  • The extra cost is foundations, racking steel and a trench from the array back to the house.
  • Setbacks, height limits and sometimes HOA rules decide whether it is allowed before anything else does.
  • It keeps your roof free, which matters most when the roof is old, shaded, small or complicated.
  • Maintenance is easier and safer, because nobody has to go on a roof to reach it.

When a ground mount is the right answer

A ground-mounted array is not usually the cheaper option. It is the better option in specific circumstances, and those circumstances are worth naming precisely.

  • The roof is unsuitable. Too shaded, too small, too broken up, wrong orientation, or structurally marginal.
  • The roof is old. Putting a twenty-five year array on a ten-year roof creates a removal and reinstall bill later.
  • You want a larger system than the roof holds. Land is the constraint you can choose; roof area is not.
  • You have open, unshaded land already. The economics change completely when the site is straightforward.

What you are paying extra for

Three things a rooftop array does not need.

A foundation: driven piles, ground screws or concrete piers, sized by a structural engineer against your soil and local wind and frost conditions. A frame: considerably more steel or aluminium than roof rails. And a trench: conduit from the array back to the house, priced by the metre and by what it has to cross.

Distance from the array to the service panel is the variable most often underestimated. A run across a driveway is not the same as a run across lawn.

Fixed tilt, and why trackers rarely make sense at home

Most residential ground mounts are fixed: set once, at an angle chosen for your latitude and your goals.

Trackers follow the sun and produce more. They also add motors, controls and moving parts to maintain, and at residential scale the extra production usually costs more than simply installing additional fixed panels would have. On a large commercial site the arithmetic changes; on a house it rarely does.

The rules that can stop it

Check these before you get attached to the idea. A ground mount is a structure, and your jurisdiction treats it like one.

Property line setbacks, maximum structure height, lot coverage limits, and in some places whether an accessory structure is permitted in a front yard at all. HOA rules may apply, though many states have solar access laws that limit what an HOA can prohibit.

  5. Racking and modulesFrame assembled and panels mounted — usually faster and safer than the equivalent roof work.
  6. Trenching and conduitThe run back to the house, at the depth your code requires.
  7. InterconnectionSame process as any grid-tied system, plus whatever the structure permit requires.

What moves the price

We do not publish a national average and present it as your price. These are the variables that separate two quotes for the same job — run your own numbers with the cost guides and calculators, and check what incentives you actually qualify for.

Take this list to the conversation. A professional who answers these directly is telling you a lot; one who deflects is telling you more.

  • What foundation type, and what is it based on — a soil assessment or an assumption?
  • How long is the trench run, and what does it cross?
  • Have you confirmed setbacks and height limits with my jurisdiction?
  • What tilt and azimuth have you chosen, and why that rather than the alternative?
  • How does the production estimate compare with the same panels on my roof?

Common questions

Is ground-mount solar more expensive than rooftop?

Usually, yes. You are paying for a foundation, substantially more racking, and a trenched conduit run that a rooftop array does not need. It can still be the better value when the roof would compromise the design or need replacing soon.

How much land do I need?

Enough for the array plus the setbacks your jurisdiction requires, and enough clearance that nothing shades it through the day. Row spacing on tilted frames means the footprint is larger than the panel area.

Do ground mounts produce more than rooftop arrays?

Per panel, often yes, because you choose the tilt and direction rather than accepting the roof’s. The gain is largest when the roof is shaded or poorly oriented.

Are solar trackers worth it on a home?

Rarely. They add moving parts and maintenance, and at residential scale the extra production usually costs more than simply adding more fixed panels would have.
